If I am installing a new toilet where previously there has been none do I use a p-trap or s-trap?

Neither. The toilet has a built-in trap. You would be double-trapping it, which violates code.

If it's a new toilet, it should have a built-in trap - no additional trap is required.

toilets have the trap built in no need to install a extra trap.just install toilet on closet flange and hook up water
