I heard that we are supposed to collide with the Adroma (sp?) galaxy and if we are expanding it seems that everything would be moving away from everything...sorry if i'm not making much sense

We don't know for sure if the Andromeda galaxy is going to collide with us, we only know it's heading in our general direction.

In any case this is still consistent with an expanding universe, because the distance between two nearby galaxies is minute compared to the overall size of the universe.

Imagine two ants on the surface of a balloon being inflated. The balloon gets bigger and bigger, but the ants can still run towards each other on it's surface even as it expands. In this comparison, the universe is like the balloon and the ants are like two nearby galaxies.

The Milky Way galaxy that our solar system is part of is expanding, it is also constantly moving. Other galaxies are also expanding and moving. There are actually many galaxies that are moving toward our galaxy and are destined to collide with us. Some of this has to do with the gravititational pull of the 2 galaxies. When Galaxies collide they morph. A very long time from now. when the Andromeda galaxy and the Milky Way galaxy actually collide and merge they will most likely create an eliptical galaxy.

The universe itself is expanding. However, that doesn't literally mean that every thing is stretching further apart from each other. Gravity is the reason the two galaxies will collide. The parts of the universe that are far enough away from each other to not have a gravitational pull are spreading out, but for individual solar systems, galaxies, and galaxy clusters, gravity is the reckoning force.

Yes the universe is expanding. On the large scale galaxies are moving apart. However, in the Local Group of galaxies (of which the Milky Way and Andromeda are part of) we are moving towards each other. Astronomers think that in about 8-10 billion years Andromeda and the Milky Way will collide and form one large galaxy.

yes, the universe is expanding and yes galaxies are moving away from eachother for the most part. but every once in a while 2 galaxies start to pull eachother towards eachother because of their huge gravity, the closer they get the stronger the gravity gets.
