My husband and I married in Pennsylvania 3 years ago. We moved to Utah where I still live, he moved back to Pennsylvania 2 weeks ago. We were planning on getting back together, but he has another girlfriend already and I am planning on getting a divorce. I am young, 24, and have been a student for the past 3 years and don't have a lot of money. What are the first steps when getting a divorce, and how do you research good lawyers.
I am not looking to be malicious and have a long drawn out battle, we don't have children and we never bought a home together so there is not much to fight over. But I also want to protect myself and the small inheritance I received from my grandma. Anyone have any good advice on what to do next???

First does the college you go to have a legal dept.or if not contact your local legal aid assoc.for free help if you qualify. Divorces are not the most pleasant thing anyone ever does but sometimes we have no choice but still hurt. This will be easier than most since theres no children involved, so basically youll need all your marital bills and verification of any and all wages, tax returns. Since this will cover two states itll take a little more time than usual, but to end it quickly you may have to be civil to him, but go for anything youre legally entitled to. Good luck and Happy Holidays

although u r not wanting 2 b malicious ur hubby might. an inheritance is still money and he may still want it. my second wife and i were only married 1 1/2 yrs, had no kids and she left saying she wanted nothing...after her atty told her what she "could" go after, it cost me $8,000, my mothers health and 1yr of my life battling attys and my ex, and in the end she got nothing, i got nothing and the atty's got it all.
as a student talk 2 ur councelor at college as they will b able 2 recommend a good atty. also the state should have a toll free number 2 learn about atty's in ur area, try contacting the chamber of commerce or look in the phone book under atty's, they usually have a number 2 call 2 learn about them and their specialities.
keep in mind that the initial consultation is usually free and the atty can give u lotsa info.
no divorce is easy weather its contested or uncontested. keep your chin up and just realize that its him that made the mistake in leaving a good gal.
good luck and GOD bless.

(1) Contact the local state bar association. They can provide referrals
(2) If you don't have kids and don't have marrital assets, and if you're not looking for (much) spousal support, the divorce will not be overly difficult. In fact, there are some people who will assist with non-contested divorces for a few hundred dollars. But realize that divorce can be messy, will cost money, and will take time.
Good luck!

As far as that inheritance goes......he can't get a cent of that. It may have changed but that was the way it was a few years back. It may be different from state to state.

You don't really even need a lawyer if you have no community property the forms can be gotten at any law library and as far as the inheritance she was not his grandmother and he really should not have any rights to it.

he cannot touch your inhertance because that is yours alone. if there is no children and no property you can file for a divorce on your own but it would be best if you got a lawyer if you cannot afford one then contact legal aide in the place you live and they will help you for free.

Simple divorce should cost you no more than 300 bucks at most. Done quicker than you can imagine. File it with irreconcilable differences.
