Sounds like Noah's Ark.
You should go with a Noah's Ark theme.

Gazzelle, wildebeest, lion. Maybe an exotic bird and/or a big snake (unless your sister is afraid of snakes).
For the purple, you could do either the hippo or possibly the elephant, since you asked about cartoon effects.

Turtles and pigs don't really fit since it seems like a jungle theme.
I would add lions, tigers, and antelopes/gazelles. Maybe rhinos or flamingos too.

Well, I hope it is a land tortoise, because then you are going with african mammals for all of the others.
Some other african mammals- hyenas, lions, cheetahs, wildebeast, antelope.
