To kill a mocking bird should be in the 9th grade cirriculum because it teaches the wrongs of prejudice, and human ignorance. But it is considered to mature for some audiences because of its vuglar references to african americans or ******.
look at cliffnotes.com and find the thing that tells you the theme.

i actually just read that book! and it actually is a very important story. the "mockingbirds" in the story represent all of the good people in the world, such as tom robinson and boo radly, as oppsed to the blue jays, such a bob ewell who try to harm the mockingbirds. in the story tom robinson is killed when inocent which teaches you that life isn't always fair and that justice can not happen with racism and prejudice. Also is teaches you that life isn't always what it appears. for example boo radley was made out to be the bad guy in the story, but in the end he was a nice innocent man. plus mockingbird has tons of symbolism in it such as the shooting of tim johnson((simbolizes atticus destroying the madness and racicm in maycomb)) the gray ghost((simbolizes the kids chasing after boo radley, (if you read the last page its pretty obvious))) and the broken pocket wacth((simbolizes that boo thinks of scout and jem as his children)) there are tons more symbols but i can't list them all. anyway i hope this helps!!

Its a classic plus a story doesn't have to have a moral to be in the curriculum's. For example you can learn about writing styles from reading books.
Its a good book, and I found it enjoyable. What I did is I downloaded an audio books version and put it on my iPod so I listened to the book while working out.

Teachers use many books such as Tkm to teach students how to identify styles of writing. Also how to find themes. We read it in 9th grade and it wasn't that bad.

You'll know that when you read it. It's a very important book. Do you know when asked why she never wrote another book,Harper Lee replied "There was nothing left for me to say" You should be exposed to all different points of you. It's not really up to you to decide why the teacher decides something is important--and sometimes you'll never get it but that's why we keep asking questions and more importantly listen

Um...to not be racist? English just wants their students to learn a story and be able to write an Essay about it and understand the book. I read Romeo and Juliet in my 9th grade year (as well as TKM), didnt learn sqwat from them but I did enjoy reading them.

Aside from being a classic novel and movie, it has a number of lessons about life and people in various stages of their lives learning both the tender and harsh realities of life. It is a beautiful coming of age story, also a story about a single parent raising two children and his love and devotion to them. I wish I had had it in my curriculum when I went to school.

I read it in 8th grade in school and I think it should be part of the curriculum. It shows the growing up of Jem and Scout and deals with racism in the old south. It's a truly phenomenal book that shows that not all of childhood is fun, but growing up isn't all it is cracked up to be.

It teaches you history. Valuable history at that. Not only the history of the language, and how it was actually spoken, but also the history of how life was during that time period. Its actually not a bad book if you just read it. Think of it as just another book.. rather than homework.. you might actually enjoy it.
