honestly, you're "permanent record" isn't that big of a deal. you think when you're 30, 18 even, some company isn't going to hire you because you were suspended for fighting???

Don't agree with David on this one :)
IF your account was accurate, seems like a typical teen dustup with only self defense in place. What might have happened had the teacher not come along is only speculation.
In any case, I am going to tell you a secret: there is no such thing as a "permanent record".
I know someone, college freshman this year, which in HS was suspended twice for drinking troubles at school events - a prom or dance, and on a school trip in another country where police and ambulances got involved.
Her parents were worried sick about school admissions, but no one cared. Kids get suspended all the time and everything else was fine. Admissions officers know sh*t happens, as long as it is not a habit and everything else is great, then no problem.
And if you are not bound for college, that is fine, but even more so no employer will ever ask, nor are you obligated to tell, if you were suspended form HS. You either have a diploma or you don't.

The same thing happened to my daughter. It was in the school rules that both parties be suspended, no matter what. We had two meeting with the Superintendent and it did no good. I wish you luck with yours. By the way, a teacher witnessed the whole thing, the girl hit her in the back of the head. Still didn't matter. Good luck, I hope you do better than we did.

In most schools, if by defending yourself, you physically hit them, you get suspended. The only way you can get out of suspension for being in a fight at my school is to either take the hits, or push the kid away til teachers arrive or whatever.

It is unfortunate because this had to happen to you. Unfortunately, with any fight, whether you started it or not, you are just as likely to get punished as the next person. I would have your parents demand a meeting with the principal or the school board because the person starting this rumor that you made fun of another students deceased mother is just as wrong as the person who started the fight. I am sorry that this has to happen to you, but I wish you luck and keep your chin up.

Although you may not like it, fights are between two people. The fact that you "defended yourself" with detrimental action, means you were fighting. Schools here only suspend one person if the other merely covers up to avoid injury.

Self defense and mutual combat are not the same thing. You did not simply defend yourself, you attacked back. That is why you are suspended.
For it to qualify as self defense you can only use the amount of force necessary to stop an attack. As running from the fight is generally an option, joining in to a fight is rarely seen as self defense.

I have never understood why schools have made these rules that all parties involved get in trouble regardless of fault. Get a lawyer!!! You have a Divine Right to protect yourself...Have everyone in that class subpoenaed to court if you have to because each one of them has to tell the truth or they get charged for purgery.

Get a lawyer, I am serious about this. It will scare the school into backing down.

There is more to the story. Exactly how did you defend yourself.
