Walmart has few (if any) knowledgable staffmembers maintaining and caring for the fish they sell. For that reason, disease is common among the fish housed in their multi-unit tank. Every compartment tank is connected to the next so when a disease or parasites arrive in a shipment, it's circulated to all the existing fish. The staff either don't care or aren't aware of the problem and do nothing to address it or warn their customers.

The bettas kept are housed in tiny, unheated cups on shelves. Walmart does not keep a warm fish room so the water temperature in those cups are far from adequate. The fish's metabolism drops, they become listless and can't fight off infections. It's possible that he died of shock after being put into your container at home. Did you dechlorinate the water beforehand? Did you acclimate the betta before introducing him into the tank?

What size tank are you using to keep a betta? Is it fitted with a heater? Filter? How long had it been running before you bought the betta?

Edit to add:

A 5 gallon tank is a good home for a betta so kudos to you for providing him an adequate living situation.

With it being a brand new tank, it's possible that 'new tank syndrome' killed him, but it seems awfully early for that to have happened with just one betta and a couple of frogs.

Unfortunately, you may have just gotten an unhealthy fish. Walmart really should stick with selling bedspreads and cheap dvd's and leave the care and sale of live animals to professionals.

You shouldn't have to take down the tank completely, but you should let it cycle before stocking it with fish (even if it is just a betta). When you do purchase a new betta, go to a reputable fish store and speak with someone in the fishroom about your tank and what you're interested in keeping.

Pellets or flakes are a fine staple food. Look at and compare the ingredients in whatever foods you consider. Use bloodworms as an occassional treat. You can also culture your own live foods -- mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp, etc.

It doesn't really matter from where you get your fish if you just bought the tank and just dumped in your fish

Your pH in your tank might be right, but i'm sure it didn't match the pH in the cup/bag wherever he came in

In order to correctly acclimate your fish to your tanks you need to float them, but at the same time add a 1/4 cup of tankwater into the fishbag/cup in order to match up the pH
only 0.2 difference, can kill a fish
so for every 0.1 difference you need to let your fish float for 10-15 min
let's say, you have a pH which is 7.2, but the store water is 7.6, you will need to acclimate your fish for 40 - 60 minutes

Also your tank was brand new, and that's another reason your betta might have died

every time i get home a fish, i put in about 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallon into my tank water, once every week at the waterchanges

also your tank needs to cycle as well
here is an article for you to read up on

And also a topic where i kept track on my cycling process

Hope that helps
Good luck

The water would have been to grimy and he replaced into already particularly sick. while they sense like that they don't devour oftentimes. The water in the small bowl I had for mine replaced into getting very murky and there replaced right into a skinny action picture on the dazzling no rely what number situations we wiped sparkling it. I had 2 women human beings. one in all them died so we at the instant placed the different one in the great tank with the different fish. The tank has a clear out and she or he has been doing greater effectual. in case you have not have been given a tank and you want yet another betta this worked ok for me with my former bettas. I merely placed on little plant that would stay in water with element of it above like bamboo even even though it would not must be. The plant will save the water sparkling and healthy yet you nevertheless ought to bathe the bowl each and every 2-3 weeks. For cleansing placed your betta in yet another field with room temperature water. Empty the bowl and cleansing soap rinse nicely and top off. enable it take a seat until eventually the water is room temperature then placed the fish back in the bowl.

Go get a Betta from a proper shop that specializes in fish. Change the water and this time don't use tap water. Use the bottled water that you would buy for yourself at the grocery store. Ironically, Wal mart usually has a case of 24 bottles of water on sale right by the front door.

Aww I know how you feel. When I was 8 I bought two goldfish from Wal Mart and put them in an aquarium..I was so happy about them until I woke up to find them dead the next morning. We discovered that the current in my aquarium was too strong for the fish to handle and it apparantly wore the fish out trying to fight it..that may or may not be the case with yours but it's definately something you could look in to..I'm sorry about your fish :(

How big is your tank? Betta's need a fairly small tank and are very territorial. Did you let him adjust to the water temp or just dump him in? Is your water getting enough air? with a plant or an airaitor. Was he eating Betta pellets or fish food? Betta's need special Betta food.

don't get one from a department store, I worked at a walmart and lets just say not the best place for a healthy fish a better bet is from a pet store after you have changed all the water.

I don't have anything to add about the betta, everything seems to have been covered, but if you didn't already know, ACF get really big and aggressive. Are you sure you don't have African Dwarf Frogs (ADF)?
