You could add baking soda or borax to the water because both will condition it. Borax will boost the power of the detergent as well. You can also add bleach if you want to whiten the whites, but wait until the water fills the drum, agitate and then add the clothing.

If you water has a lot of iron, don't use chlorine bleach! It turns whites yellow. Try hydrogen peroxide bleaches such as OxyClean and soak the clothes in hot water and OxyClean for awhile before washing. There's another product called YellowOut that will help remove the dingy yellow stuff. A friend swears by Borax in every white load......yeah, it helps a bit.

Generally I avoid buying white cottons for outer clothes and realize tshirts are going to turn yucky eventually but will be underneath an overshirt.

If you mean hard water...I've heard that adding some fabric softener to the wash load helps to soften the water. Use borax or hydrogen peroxide to wash whites in any kind of water. It's safer than bleach and more environmentally friendly.

Get a water filter for your water main or for your inlet spickets and change them regularly. Hard water does mess up laundry.

Ideally, dishes and laundry should be washed only with distilled water, but purified water is the next best thing
