It sounds like you got ahold of a weednfeed that was not for St. Augustine.
They are all about the same, as far as brand names go, but make sure it is for st. augustine, not for centepede.
Let the grass grow a little higher than u normally would, it's the clean cut, not the height that makes it look neat. short cut is very, very shocking to st. augustine, also make sure u water the weed n feed in very well. use a winterizer now and a spring version next spring.
also keep it mowed, even at the higher setting. mowing stops verticle growth which is the habit of most weeds, and encourages horizontal growth which is the habit of ur grass, so it helps. if u don't get much rain next spring, water for the first little while, especially when the nights stay above 70 degrees, that's when grass grows 24/7.
good luck

Southern Weed And Feed

There is a possibility you used the wrong weed and feed. (there is one for St. Augustine and there are others for other grass types) If it conatined 2-4-d it would have damaged your grass. Or you applied when it was too hot

You might want to use a selectice herbice that can be sprayed. On St. Augustine, Atrazine works fairly well as both a pre and post emergent.

Follow the directions exactly...or call a professional.

I would stay with the granules for fertilizer and a weed killer with trimec in it. St. Augustine is a hardy grass and using a fertilizer with a higher rate of nitrogen in cooler weather is fine. When it gets hotter I would use something lower in nitrogen. Spot spray the weeds for awhile to prevent over spraying. The weed killer should have a defoliant in it that will wilt the leaves. The weedkiller basically will speed up the life cycle of the plant. Good Luck!!

Try the spray on stuff that's for lawns (the kind that kills the weeds and not the grass - make sure you get the right stuff or you'll kill your lawn again). It comes in its own spray bottle and you can direct it at the weeds, without spraying it on healthy, weed-free grass.

Try using an organic fertilizer which gives grass much more beneficial ingrediants than other fertilizers and grass should outgrow and overcrowd most weeds . Then with a small amount of hand weeding you should have a very strong lawn
