I've raised Black Labs all my life and made a life long study of the breed. Their tail lengths are based on genetics. That breed using the tail for many things. One is communication to me and other dogs. What's fun about watching a lab in the water is watching them use their tails as a rudder. I can recognize seven different tail positions that mean something as part of my dogs communicating with me...They are the best.

Same reason horses do, to keep the bugs off.

The girl above me said, "to balance their weight", that is the case with squirrels but not dogs.

Most dogs are born with long tails, but remember humans have played with natural selection so we really don't have a good reason to give.

long tails were created to help them balancing body while they running in manuvers. not just dogs have long tails, most animals that move in high speed had that too.

Balance is probably the right answer, but they also have need of stories to tell their puppies. Good morning. Oh wait, that`s tales. Never mind.

because dogs use their tails to counterbalance when they are running. for example when they are running full speed and take a sharp right they move their tail left to counter balance themselves. also they make excellent rudders when swimming to they can steer themselves
