I don't expect everyone to be competent in spelling and grammar, but typographical errors that are just plain indicative of the typist's carelessness really bug me. What, are their fingers tripping over each other trying to get the "h" before the "e" in "the"? One of the most commonly used words in the English language, and yet it still gets butchered...

If that is all you have to make you extremely annoyed I am sorry for you. There are more serious annoyances 'worth' worrying about in this life.
This is a social site not school.
I have always been a good speller, but some people can't take in spelling easily. It doesn't mean they are all buffoons, some are very educated. Winston Churchill was a bad speller.
Even if the writers used the spell check they would not always realise the correct spelling of a word.

No, I don't. I homeschooled my kids, and I know that people get 'excited' when they come to Y!A, and frankly, I have fun trying to figure out some of the misspelled words here. Yes, some people can't type well (I type 120 wpm, perfectly), some don't know proper grammar and punctuation ... and some of us are just a bit 'prideful' ... what in the HECK does a semi-colon have to do with SPELLING? Your 'question' and the 'example' don't make a lot of good sense ... but punctuation and spelling are NOT the same thing at all.

Some of it is text message-speak, which I find even more annoying than the misspellings. I can forgive a typo or two; I've made them, myself. But the netspeak just makes people look uneducated, and every time I read that stuff, I want to tell those folks to take an English class.

I'm not a grammar freak like some people, but I do get annoyed when we have all these 12 year old kids that can't spell to save their life. If you are going to write have and spell it hav...take the extra millisecond to add the e; it only makes you look literate and allows people to take your question seriously.

The typos are very frustrating, especially when the asker is really upset and I sincerely want to offer helpful advice. He/she's not thinking too clearly, and communication gets really muddy. It seems that there are three basic reasons for the mistakes:
1. Typing too quickly (due to emotional stress, sense of urgency, etc.)
2. Lack of education/knowledge
3. English is not the native language of the asker

Doesn't bother me, I still know what they mean. I was an English major and I still misspell words. I know when to use a colon or a semi-colon since I had it drummed into my head in college. If others don't, so what?

It's worse than that.
We have spelling problems, grammar problems, questions that look like they were poorly translated from a foreign tongue, and questions that aren't even questions.
I wish they'd clean it up. This is a great forum. There is so much junk in here though.
Oh, I also wish they would raise the age limit.

Both I'm sure. Plus people probably don't go back and reread what they wrote.
I have problems with some words....definetly with sentence structure..........I'm awfull.
And ya, just like alot of things these days........no one gives a sh*t enough to take the time to make sure kids that are in school no how to read and write before they graduate.
Plus your on this thing..........sometimes you just don't care how the he*l you come across.
