missile shot at the bridge so nobody can get off the island. they were filtering out the infected people and keeping them on the area. and that is all i will say because i don't want to ruin it for others!

A plane flies by and launches missiles at the bridges to destroy them. They did that because they essentially wanted to quarantine that part of NYC, and didn't want the infected getting off the island.

a possibility is that the pilots were infected and transfered there energy through destroying the bridges, because right after this, the infected jump on the helicopter trying to take it down. it could also be to contain the infection, because the infected started getting violent and would have went for the bridges.

They shot at the bridge to separate the city from the rest of the world. I believe it was military who shot the bridge. Strange movie though, don't you think?

ya know, i wondered about that too. it's not like the infected people had access or the capability to shoot missiles. the only thing i could think was that it was the governments attempt to kill all who were quarantined? a tad bit of bad timing, though.

I haven't read the book, but I got the impression that the bridges were taken out by the military (U.S.) in order to prevent the spread of the infection off of the island (Manhattan).

The were sealing of the island of Manhatten because the virus had become air born and Marshal law was declared. They were fighter jets that shot them.
