What might I might be missing that won't allow me to disconnect it?

I removed one for a remodel one time and the top of the shaft was connected to a bracket that was screwed into one of the rafters in the attic.

I removed one once that required a med size crow bar and considerable force to break the build up of grease and grim.
If your sure you have removed all the screws, try a bar. Use a piece of luon or thick plastic to protect the cabs. If nothing else this should let you figure out where its being held

There are usually screws in the side of it attaching it to the cabinets and sometimes there are screws in the top of it,too. There might also be some in the top that are hidden.
