It depends on if you mean "81 square feet" or "81 feet, squared." And in the former situation, it also depends on if you know whether or not the garden is actually a square. If it's 81 square feet and we know it's a square, then each side would be sqrt(81) = 9 feet in length. If it's 81 feet, squared, then each side is 81 feet. Either way, the amount of fencing is equal to the perimeter of the garden, which would be four times the side length of a square.

If the area is 81 square feet and you don't know what the actual dimensions are (It could be 9 ft x 9 ft, 3 ft x 27 ft, 1 ft x 81 ft, or one of infinitely many other possibilities.), then you can't find the amount of fencing needed.

That is normally refered to is 81'X 81', so you woud need 81' for the four sides or 81X4=324'.

Duh, If it is a square garden the sides would be 9 feet x4 sides = 36 feet of fencing. If it is not square it will take more fencing.
