Even how great today's team of Moss, Brady, Welker, Vrabel, Maroney are...they are NOT the 89' 49ers! Check out this Roster
Harris Barton, Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana,Charles Haley,Brent Jones,Matt Millen, Joe Montana, Tom Rathman, Jerry Rice, Bill Romanowski, John Taylor, and back up qb Steve Young!!
Brady and Montana...either one
Moss and Rice....Rice is the greatest ever
Craig and Maroney....sorry not yet Maroney...Craig might be a hall of famer
Welker and Taylor.....Taylor was a top 10 WR in the league and only 2nd on his team just like Welker
Rodney Harrison or Ronnie Lott! Give me Lott twice on Sunday
Matt Millen and Bill Romanowski vs. Vrabel and Seau...if you are not old enough then watch these LB's destroy offenses!. especially considering Charles Haley and Harris Barton were destroying the front lines of any offense!
Give Me the Defense and Offense of the 49ers of 1989. You can't compare numbers too closely because they did run different offenses so be careful trying to tell me how many TD's Brady has thrown...They beat the John Elway Broncos 55-10! So they were dominating..Elway threw for 108 yds and 2 ints!
Their 3 playoff game scores were 41-3, 30-3, and 55-10! They are the best. . . . . PERIOD...Pats are great and amazing but the 89 Niners are the greatest ever even though they lost 2 games...Put that team in a playoff with any team from any era and they win. They outcoach teams, they out talent teams, and they would out hustle teams.

If you adjust for players being stronger and faster today, the 49ers win easily. The league is mediocre today compared to the 80s due to the Salary Cap. Back then the 49ers had to beat a number of good/great teams to win the SB. They played the Rams 3 times (once in the NFC Championship game). The also beat the Eagles (they had a great team), the Giants, and the Bears. Finally the 49ers are better at many positions than the Patriots: Montana over Brady, Rice and Taylor are superior WR to what the Pats have. Brent Jones was a great TE. Craig and Rathman is a superior backfield. The defense of that 49ers was fantastic especially with Lott in the secondary. Moss would get flattened. 49ers win by 17-20 points. Brady intercepted 3 times and sacked 4 times.

I agree with georgerin and Jason. The league is watered today because of the salary cap. Pre-Salary Cap winners are in general much tougher than the Salary Cap era teams. The 1989 49ers would dominate the Pats. If you look at most positions, just as georgerin mentioned, the 49ers are better at almost every position. QB, WR, RB, FB, TE. I think Moss would be complaining about how hard Lott hit after Moss was knocked out by Lott during the 1st quarter. The rest of the 49ers secondary was also incredible. In addition, their defense just stuffed the run. 49ers offense got all the press, but they had a great defense as well.

The Denver Broncos were a pretty good team lead by a qb of Brady's stature in John Elway, the Dolphins had an offensive machine lead by Dan Marino another hall of famer, both tried and failed so why would anyone think Brady could beat Montana and the niners. The one dimensional offense of NE would be stopped by the 49er defense and the 49er offense would rack up points on the NE defense!

I'd have to go with 1989 niners. its a no brainer this league is watered down because of the cap. The overall talent poll was much greater for the niners. It would be neat to see how either qb would pull it out. I mean Montana has ice running through his veins. Brady has the same thing too. Still have to go with 49ers how can you go against one of the all time greatest offensive genius in Bill Walsh.

I love the Niners. I grew up out there watching Montana. BUT.......if you were to transport that team to today...they would lose.
If you were to take those players, and coaches...and give them access to all the same training regimens, supplements, equipment and what not that todays athletes benefit from....then I believe the 49ers would win.
Montana vs Brady? Brady is physically the better QB...but I still have trouble believing he is the better leader...and Montana did amazing things in spite of his limitations...so my money is on Joe.

Montana better than Brady.
Brady's winning drives in the Super Bowls were awesome, but nothing close to The Catch or the drive vs. the Bengals in the Super Bowl.
Also, Moss can be great, but he's not even close to a primed Jerry Rice.

That 49ers team, because they could actually stop the run. Yes, this is coming from a Patriots fan in case anybody wondered.
