I am in my 20s and I love Frank Sinatra. I listen to R. Kelly or one of the new popular artists and I wonder how has this become mainstream? Frank may have had the same goal as R Kelly, that of getting a woman home, but Frank used poetry where as R Kelly uses vulgarity. So I am asking, and I would appreciate answers from older folks. Was there a time when people thought Sinatra was a pig like I think R Kelly is a pig?

Sorry, I have no idea who R Kelly is. I guess I'm not missing much. Sinatra first became popular when my mother was a teenager. If she were still living she would be 76 now. I grew up with the Beattles, the Stones, Aretha and so on, and I love classic rock, and that includes people like Dave Matthews and Green Day. Even a few Metallica songs are really good. I also love a lot of classic Classical and even Opera (nothing experimental please!) Classic Jazz can't be beat. Sinatra was special and I supposed some old fuddy duddies from that generation didn't appreciate him. You have to admit though, he could really sing. Not so many of this generation of musicians have any discernable talent or ability. A few do. I'd like to think I'm open to hearing new music, but you have to show me something real. No whiny women, RAP or rage.

Music? How can they claim it's music? I came of age with the Beatles, Lovin' Spoonful, The Mamas and the Papas, Peter Paul & Mary, The Rolling Stones -- all that good stuff. BUT I grew up listening to Marty Robbins, Eddy Arnold, Tennessee Ernie Ford and, yes, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Perry Como -- and my particular favorite, Mel Tormé. I don't think anyone ever thought of Sinatra as a pig. He's my mom's favorite, and I don't believe I ever heard my Gramma say "He's a pig." This new fondness for vulgarity is just little kids crying out for attention. Innuendo does it better!

Sure they did. But whatever they thought about Mr. Sinatra they couldn't deny that he had class.

As to R. Kelly...he's just a pig.

Music is a matter of taste. However as an old fogie I reckon "old" music is preferable because it has melody, counterpoint, and complexity, lacking in modern noise which mostly skates on volume and simple repetition. Classics, trad jazz, and ethnic musics were my "bag" as a youngster (and still are), and though I appreciated Sinatra's voice and others, I never was keen on the obviously false and contrived "emotions" of pop music then, as now. So follow your own taste, but always explore, remembering there are wider fields.
