well you don't need to worry about it because a 1998 camry V6 or I4 don't have a distributor cap or rotor. your car has ingnition coils which replaced the distributor. if changing anything maybe a new set a wires, with some new plugs (which should be changed every 60,000 miles). and you shoud be good

Yes. This is a wear item. Some later model cars no longer have a distributor, but if yours does, the spring loaded button in the middle of the distributor cap will eventually wear. Sometimes a cap can crack, or the resistor that is built into the rotor will break down and cause inconsistency. Also, be sure that the mechanism inside the distributor is lubricated and cleaned periodically to prevent loss of power and MPG.

The distributer cap distributes spark to the spark plugs of each vehicle cylinder which ignites the fuel... the rotor needs to be replaced with the distributer cap.
