Man! I was SO into some good stuff from the period, ....cause unlike most people who laugh about "Hair Band" this and that - i was there! But i was into more serious and credible non-pop bands:

Loudness
TNT
Schon & Hammer
Dixie Dregs
Coney Hatch
Pat Travers
Accept
AXE
Michael Schenker Group
Vandenberg
Saxon
Blackfoot
The Snowmen (I'm sure nobody here knows them but me - an 80's So Cal act that had 2 records out, and i saw em about 12 times..)

I was too young to understand rock music in the 80's used to think it was just loud banging sounds!!
As the time went on I realised what kind of music it was..
Def Leppard
Whitesnake
Heart
They were my fave. I have an eclectic choice of music from the 80's right upto the 00's. The 90's i wasn't too pleased with but still not bad.

I was, still am, and always will be a fan of most of the bands that came out of the era. I actively seek out their new releases (yes, most are still recording). My favorite's of the lesser known bands from that era were Tyketto, Badlands, Blue Murder, and.... I'm not even going to get started or this paragraph will turn into a Senior Thesis.

Marillion,,(Script for a Jesters Tear,Misplaced Childhood,Fugazi to name a few) Judas Priest,(anything with Ripper on Vocals),Queensryche,(suite Sister Mary..Live perfomane is amazing),Iron Maiden,,Dio(Rock and Roll Children).Just to name a few...
Marillion with Fish on vocals always tops it for me..His Lyrics are so poetic..Just listen to an album and it tells a story right the way through.

There are so many to choose from, many of which have already been mentioned so I'll add two more - the second of which started late '70's but should still count.

Tygers of Pan Tang
Molly Hatchet

Where should I start? Overkill, Megadeath, Death Angel, Danzig, Slayer, Anthrax were my favorites for stuff with a lot more power cords.
For the softer stuff it was Van Halen, White Snake, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Cinderella, Metallica before they sold out and became mainstream MTV crap, and Def leopard.
And thanks for the free points.
