I have a 1999 Volkswagen golf and when i try shitfing into 2nd or 4th gear at times it slips out, especially in 2nd gear. When I try shifting gears I have to basically force it into the gears. It also grinds a lot when I try shifting into second gear. My actual clucth cable still feels pretty tight, but its annoying whenI am trying to get on the highway. A little help please!!

would it be easier to just replace it? Its very time consuming for me to take the car apart and put it back together to just do it again if it goes bad in the near future

Slipping out of gear can be caused by a bad roll stop mount. If your shift linkage is tight or hard to shift you may have rusty pivot points on the linkage. If the motor torques or moves alot forward and backwards when hitting the gas the roll stop may be bad and will cause the tranny to jump out of gear. If the gears are grinding you may have bad synco rings and worn gear teeth. Try double clutching to see if it shifts better.
A bad clutch usually slips. Try a rev and dump in 4th gear from a stop, if it kills the motor the clutch is OK. If the the clutch doesn't kill the motor you will feel the slippage.

It's the synco ring. That part of the transmission matches the speed of the gears so you can shift up or down without double clutching or crunching the gears. I would look for a used transmission in the junk yard.

Sounds lie you got high mileage engine and clutch.By having high mileage on a clutch your pressure plate has gotten weaker, replace it along with having the flywheel resurfaced. And replace the clutch disc and throw out bearing also.Your transmission gears should be fine but it would be a good idea to change your fluid in the transmission when done.

the problems with the second gear is worn out synchronizer and thrust bearing

it could be your throw out bearing on your clutch or your springs on your pressure plate or clutch

the tooth on your gear may have broken of if it was your clutch it would grind on all or most gears
