slope intercept form is
y = mx + b
so
5x - 8y = -17
-8y = -17 -5x
8y = 17 + 5x
y = 5/8 x + 17 / 8

well slope itercept is y=mx + b
so you have 5x-8y=-17
-5x -5x
so now it's -8y=-5x-17
then divide -8y from the other side
like -8y=-5x-17
/-8 /-8 /-8
so now its y=-5x over -8+2.125
-5 over -8 is equal to 5 over 8 so either way its the same.

- 8y = -17 - 5x
8y = 17 + 5x
y = 5/8 x + 17/8

Solve the equation for Y in the positive.... Can you to that? Then the coefficient of x is the slope, and the real number is where the equation crosses the y-axis.

first you want the y's on one side by themselves, so you subtract 5x.
-8y = -5x - 17
next you divide by -8 to get y by itself to get
y = 5/8x + 17/8
hope i helped!
