from a mobile phone you dial +44 instead of 01144

Danechip is wrong the area code for London is 020 or 20 if calling from outside the UK. From Canada younosygit is correct. Londoners still sometime class their number of 020& or 0208 (sometime 0203) but the code for London is 020 followed by an eight digit local number. If code starts 07 then it is a mobile phone and you need to be careful as the cost for calling a mobile in the UK is borne by the caller not the owner of the phone.

You dial 0044 ( country code of Britain ) then (0) 207 or (0)208 ( omit the 0 in the bracket , and 0207,0208 are both London area codes so it depends on central or outskirt London number you want to dial----0207 is the very centre of London like zone 1 or 2, 0208 is for zone 3,4,5,6 or outskirt of London )

I am trying to remember - I was last in California in 2005.

I think you access international by dialling 0011, and I know you drop the leading 0 on UK numbers, so to dial 0208 123 4567 here you would dial 0011 208 123 4567.
