This issue was before the war took place. The South wanted more Slave States for more Slave Votes. While the North wanted more free States for more free state votes in congress and the Senate. Each wanted to make their point of view stronger in Numbers. That's the short and long of it! Now knock their socks off!

I can't give you anything original, but I thought you should be aware that there are a number of games that have covered the entire Civil War. GDW's House Divided was an area movement game which was rather simple and popular. Victory's Games Civil War was probably the best hex boardgame and probably the best simulation. War Between the States was a massive hex boardgame which was a monster game with a number of maps. Battlecry was the very simple Milton Bradley game covering the whole Civil War. Since commercial, recreational board wargaming originated in 1959, there have been a number of games which cover the whole Civil War, and hundreds which have had a Civil War battle or campaign topic.

The north would want a free state admitted to the Union to imbalance representation in the Senate so that slavery could be outlawed. The south would want a slave state admitted so that slavery was one-up on the north and slavery would be a guarenteed institution for a while at least.

South wants it to be a slave state to run the farms, its all about capitalism. North wishes it to be free b/c they dont need slaves b/c they were industrial.

The more states/territories each had on their side, the more power to them.
