How come some countries are hotter than others? Is it that the sun is actually closer to that part of the earth or what exactly?

Part of the reason is something called insolation, which is the angle of the Earth at the latitude of that country. There's a link below where you can read all about it.

Another reason is geography. A lot of things about a region's geography influence its climate. For example, in between India and SE China is a large mountain range. Rain clouds sort of run into that mountain range and dump all their rain on India. So it's wet and muggy there. But just a few miles away on the other side of the mountains, they get almost no rain and it's a dessert.

Another example is Great Britain. If you look at a map, they are actually at the same latitude as parts of Alaska! You'd think GB would be a chunk of ice, but in fact they have fairly mild winters. In this case, the reason is the artic conveyor, an ocean current that keeps nice warm water (and thus, warm air) around the island.

There are lots of examples like this.

The equator gets the more of the sun's energy than locations north or south of the equator. Although a point on the equator will be closer to the sun than a point on the arctic circle, that is not the reason it is hotter. You could argue that the top of mount Everest is closest to the sun but it is never very warm there. The things that effect how hot it is include the amount of solar radiation, the prevailing winds, the elevation about sealevel, how close it is to a large body of water, the type of ground cover, humidity, etc. It is much more complicated than just distance from the sun.
