"Chrstnwr" points out that Yugoslavia no longer exists, so I hope your teacher knows this. If you figure the three major countries that split off from the former Yugoslavia,
Serbia - slightly smaller than South Carolina
Bosnia - slightly smaller than West Virginia
Croatia - also slightly smaller than West Virgina

If you add in Slovenia and Montenegro, you might estimate the size of the former Yugoslavia as two West Virginias
and a South Carolina.

Tito did not create Yugoslavia. It was created after World War I - - in one of the Versailles treaty (1919) provisions.
Tito came into power after World War Two. He had fought against the Nazi occupation on WWII. He was an absolute ruler or "dictator" - - supposedly communist but not really in cahoots with the Soviet Union - that was quite a trick!

The "Balkans" - which includes the countries of the former Yugoslavia - were a "powder keg" just before WWI because the people were tired of being controlled by other people. They had been under the Islamic Ottoman empire (the Turks) for almost 500 years. When they finally fought off the Ottoman Turks, Austria tried to control them.
These people just wanted to be independent.

Milosevic was initially popular because he stood for Serbian independence - Serbia for Serbs. Many people were fed up with being persecuted and pushed around by other ethnic groups. Unfortunately, their reaction was extreme - violent and cruel to non-Serbs. But you must understand how severely the Serbian people had suffered at the hands of others for so many years.

Yugoslavia was a former Soviet entity that dissolved in the early 90s, before you were probably born.

Here's a wikipedia article that might help you out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslavia

Remember to cite your sources. I would suggest going to a library and finding age appropriate material on Yugoslavia as well as Slobodan Milosevic and Ivan Stamboulic.

If you want to compare something you have to have something to compare it to. So compare the size of Yugoslavia to what?
