I knew a "cutter" and he cut himself on the forearms, biceps, chest, stomach, calves, and thighs. Basically anywhere he could keep it hidden underneath clothing. He would even make long scratches down his back or have his girlfriend do so with her nails.
Cutting is a very nasty habit to get into. People cut themselves because they are in pain (or hurt so deeply that they feel numb hence welcoming any feeling at all, even pain from cutting themselves) and don't know how else to express it.
If you are considering doing something like this please try talking to a parent, counselor or other responsible adult first about your problems. Cutting is never something to resort to. It certainly won't make your problems go away. They'll still be there waiting for you when you're done.
That is unless you take it too far... That friend I had? The more he cut himself the number he felt inside. Eventually he went too far and ended up in the hospital. He's in a mental ward now. He was the lucky one. His girlfriend (also a cutter) didn't make it. She ended up slashing her own wrists and bleeding to death after she found him.
If you know someone who's cutting themselves you have to be brave and tell an adult immediately. Keeping it a secret won't make you a good friend. Sometimes a true friend has to step forward when no one else will.
Here's hoping you just asked out of curiosity or for research ;-)

I think it depends on the person. I know a girl who hid her cutting on her chest because she lived with her father and felt he would not check her body for cuts.
I think the reason for cutting may have something to do with where you choose to cut. Some people cut for attention or to be part of a group or for acceptance. This might lead them to cut where it can be seen. Many people cut to feel emtionally better. It actually releases something in the brain that temporarily causes a feeling of contentment and peace when a person is sad or depressed or highly aggitated. If a person is very embarressed or confused by their actions they may tend to hide the cutting. People recovering from drug addiction have been known to turn to cutting for the same reasons. They may or may not hide it. Cutting for all these reasons can become addictive whatever the reason you start out doing it.

When I was younger I used to cut. I would cut places people wouldn't normally see. It got hard to explain scars. I would cut the inside of my arms above the elbow, my legs (I could say I did it shaving), anywhere. Please don't start. It's a compulsion and it gets bad. I still get urges to do it (I don't)and I stopped 5 years ago.

When I was a cutter, I did it all over my body - I have scars everywhere. I needed help in expressing my emotions in a healthier way. It was a way to release emotion, and to feel something that I was in control of. Few people can beat this without professional help. It's a matter of finding a healthier way to channel your feelings. Thank goodness my parents made me get help before I hurt myself worse.

At first I did it on my arms and wrists but then I got sick of explaining the scars so I started doing it in places no one could see.Like the thighs and calves. Now I just go get tatoos.

I used to cut in the 8th and 9th grade (and then I discovered drugs and alcohol... but that's another story).
I would cut on my ankles because socks would cover it up. My current boyfriend used to cut on his upper arm because short sleeves would cover it up.
People who cut where you can see WANT people to know they do it. People like my boyfriend and I didn't.
And I disagree with Boo. The "cutters" are predominately middle-school and early high-school. Typically in later high school, kids grow out of it or find an alternative (like I did).

The young women I've know in treatment, cut on wrists--thighs are pretty risky. Those y. women were all subjected to sexual abuse and had had to "adjust" to abuse!! To do that they denied all feelings. Cutting allowed them to "feel" something--if only some pain. What is your interest? If that's intriguing to you, I suggest you explore your own background!
