It depends on the gift and the ability of the person who made it. Because of being on a limited income I do make some of the gifts I give. They aren't chrochet vests and sweaters with the arms long enought for a monkey. I do acid etching on mirrors, some of the designs I do take 30 hours to cut the stencil. the mirrors are normally at least 24X36, One year I made paper weights for everyone. Have you seen the blocks of acrillic and etched into the center are different scenes, those are fun, 16 to 18 hours for a paper weight about 4" square. Each one done for that person, my son-in-law loves to fish, the design in his was a river and tree, a creel, and tacklebox and fishing pole. Another was a football scene, field, goal posts, scoreboard, their favorite teams logo. One was the hardest I had ever done it was the outside front entrance of Wriggley's Stadium. So you see home made gifts have come a long way. M.C. & H.N.Y.

Wow, I made ornaments for everyone this year and almost every gift I've recieved so far is handmade. I spent hours on each ornament and specially decorated each one to match the decor and Christmas theme of each recipient, I hope that wasn't tacky?? But the lovely handmade doileys my neighbor spent 2 months making for me and the awesome quilted reversable Christmas table runner my mother in law hand sewed for me will be treasures in my home for years to come. I know the hours it took to make these items and the thought that went behind them I would never consider tacky.

It's not tacky if you can't afford presents. If you do have money for presents, then why just get small inexpensive gifts for people? You can always do like $5 or $10 gift cards for Starbucks or McDonald's.

I think it's very thoughtful!
Think about it, an adult usually have a job, which means an adult is most likely busy everyday.
Instead of spending a few extra bocks, the person decides to spending time and caring to make something.
Unless the other person only likes useful or expensive stuff, I think the other person will think it's thoughtful too!

well, depends if they are artistic or not! If they aren't, the gift looks tacky, nasty and poorly made. if they are artistic and creative - it can be beautiful and very personal and special.
home-made cookies are a good idea - they are always nice - brownies/blondies/snickerdoodles/gingerbread - placed on a pretty christmas platter or bowl and tied with clear cello wrap and a big ribbon

Thoughtful if it is a close family member of friend. Tacky if it is not. If I'm not close with someone, I would rather them just send me a christmas card then make me something. â¥â¥â¥

Depends on what the gift is.
If the homemade gift is cotton ball snowmen and macaroni necklaces - tacky.
If the homemade gift is a scrapbook or nice ornament or nice painting or decor item, or sewn garment or blanket or wooden shelf or something - thoughtful.

Perhaps the tacky gift is one which is bought and paid for with money and has no personal investment of the giver in it.

I think homemade gifts are thoughtful I often make a gift for someone and if someone makes one for me I treasure it I think a homemade gift is much better than a bought one as it shows someone is thinking of you and has taken time to make it for you
