Get an enclosed oil heater, they look like an old radiator and are really efficient and will heat about 700 sq feet, that is all I used in NC for heat in the winter. You start out on high and as soon as it gets warm you can turn it down. Mine would run me about 8 bucks a month. If you put it close to where you sit you will stay toasty all the time. I kept 2 in my garage all the time in Idaho and it kept it at 55 during the winter. They sell them all over the place in the winter. It is radiant heat and you never have to add oil and it is totally enclosed, just plug it in.

The propane ceramic are the most efficient but you need ventilation when you use them, so it kind of defeats its own purpose.
Orchard Hardware Stores (OSH) and other places I'm sure.. had these electric heaters that looked like pot bellied stoves and fireplaces. Probably not the best efficiency-wise but VERY ROMANTIC.... Some were small enough to even fit in MY place.
It's been getting into the 40's at night here and been raining for the last couple of days, so I've had my heater on, too. No freezing, tho..... That's why I live in California.

Have you ever heard of EdenPure heaters? They are great. You can check out the web site on them. Mom and dad got one of the big ones and then got me one that was smaller than theirs. It also filters the air as well and you just pull the filter out of the back, wash it off or shake it out and put it back in. Never have to buy filters for it either.
They heat up their living room with theirs and it is bigger than the room that you want to heat up. I live in an 8 X 30 travel trailer and it heats up the whole trailer with no problem. It is thermostat control as well. The "case" the heater is in never gets hot, you can put stuff on the heater if you want to. You can't knock or turn over the heater by accident either. I have used many different types of space heaters in here and this one has been the best kind that I have ever used. I even used one of those radiator types in here. It is VERY quite to run. They will even let you try it out to see if you like it. They are not very heavy either. Go check out their web site and see what you think about them. To me, mine is worth it's weight in gold and then some. They don't cost that much to run either. The other space heaters cost more to run by far than these do. I have had stuff get up against the other heaters and scorch what ever it was, that has never happened with my EdenPure heater.

Convector heaters would be more popular I think? I have 3 in my house costing around €25 each & they cost about the same as a lightbulb to run & heat the room very quickly then they turn off on a thermostat

I'm very happy with my 4-speed heater (coil element), with a fan. It is quiet and efficient, coming on and off according to the thermostat setting. A friend has one of the newer oil-filled heaters and he likes it because it is quiet (no fan, so no noise of any kind except a "click" when it turns on), but it gives off a slight smell of oil when it is in use. Of the two, I prefer the fan-forced model that I have (the fan is not noisy).

28 where you live come on == am not a great fan of space heaters -- the are dangerous to use -- the few nights you will need one it would be better to get a fat man or a skinny one that moved fast!!!

A ventless natural gas one is most economical. Please choose the type with radiant blocks in them. They are better than just the open flame types. The sales person can help you with the BTU size you need for a 12 x17 room. These are sold at most home improvement or hardware stores (Lowes,True Value, etc.)
