Humans by nature come with a unique range of qualities and characteristics which are neither essentially good or bad. How these qualities and characteristics are channeled though nurture, education, and experience makes the difference. For example, greed or selfishness. All babies and children want more. More food, more attention, more of whatever someone else has. How is the child trained to channel this quality? Being greedy to learn learn and understand truth or being greedy to acquire more virtues and be known as kind, patient, honest, etc., would be greed and selfishness channeled into positive personal qualities. On the other hand, greed and selfishness channeled into acquiring wealth at the expense of others, always wanting to one-up the other guy, or being willing to cheat shows greed and selfishness at its worst. Consequently, education and nurturing at an early stage on through adolescence and late teens are essential to helping a child/youth channel her unique set of qualities and characteristics into positive interpretations and manifestations. Essentially, each of us is a unique bundle of potential to be the light of the world or its greatest darkness.

Nature is selfish and self centered, why would you expect humans to be any different? Unless you think we are demigods. But you would only think that if you believed in the supernatural, right?

Tiger_10 - ALL humans (and ALL living creatures) are by nature (Mother Nature) self-centered...it is one of our basic survival mechanisms. It's not about whether being selfish and self-centered right or wrong, it's not a choice, it's about self-preservation and the preservation of our species.

We're born self-centered. An infant is totally unconcerned with the world beyond its own bodily needs. We have to be taught to interact with others. Some of us are, for one reason or another - and often through no fault of their own - incapable of learning, and so we have a spectrum of people who cannot properly interact with others, from sociopaths to autistics.

There is no one good. there is not even one. people being raped by rapists, and we the people claim we are blameless. wrong. all. and swelling up inside of us theres this pride in us, this arrogance, and the sense that Im not half as bad as this friend of mine so i must be ok. we mean well, dont we? but ive never seen good intentions set a man free. hanging out for six hours, marred beyond recognition, still, a proclamation was made louder than the loudest temptation, with more beauty than all of creation. IT IS DONE arise and rejoice for freedom has come. Thats my answer.

its in our nature to be selfish. any other animal, killing is not thought about, it is acted upon. we simply take this to a degree of consumerism with our modern world which exploits the idea of being selfish. all in all, it is what is driving us to better ourself or not.

We humans are 'wired` for self preservation.
