For the babies that take alimentum or neocate formula, how did your baby tolerate rice cereal? My daughter is now 4 months old and the doctor said we can start or wait til 6 months we both agreed it wuold be best to wait 6 months since she has such a sensitive stomach but I am just curious as to how your son/daughter did? My doctor said sometimes not always but sometimes even though the baby has a hard time with the formula they might be able to be okay with the rice cereal...so I was just wondering what you experienced...thanks for answers in advance!!

My son was on Alimentum until he was 15 mo old. He had no problem with Rice Cereal. We first started putting the cereal in his bottle because of reflux but about 4 1/2 mo we started spoon feeding it. Rice Cereal is chosen as a first food because it's least offensive to their tiny systems.

Its not just some times, its most times. Babies who start out with sensitives stomachs tend to be that way because they werent able to develop properly inutero because of some lack or time constraint. They make up for it in the first few months of life, which is why most babies tend to be done with colic and reflux by 4-6 months.

I had colic horribly, and spit up everything I was fed as a newborn, my mom finally gave up and started me on whole milk at 3 months.

I have no health issues, have never had any (except those injected into me by doctors) and can eat anything under the sun. For whatever reason formulas and soy made me sick, but straight milk didnt.

Anyway, the only way you'll know is if you try, you can always not give it to her for a while if it messes her up.

FYI, most babies get stopped up, gassy or fussy the first few days or even a week after starting a new form or kind of food. Its normal until their natural bacteria in the gut adjust.

If she's sensitive, definately wait until later. There is no law that says you have to start them on solids at 6 months on the dot. I started my daughter at 6 1/2 months, after she started swiping at my food. A friend of mine didn't start hers until he was almost 1! He didn't need it. All kids are different and if yours is sensitive, like the last little guy I mentioned, later is probably a better idea. Give time for their little systems to mature a bit more. My friend's boy is 3 and now has no problems other than a nut allergy. Many kids have those though...

it also depends on why she's on alimentum or neocate. Our 5 mth old is on neocate d/t milk protein allergy, and had also been told that most likely meant soy also.Well, the pedi gastro dr informed us that rice cereal has soy in it,and to not give it d/t allergy. There is a cereal you can buy that is soy free. Our baby was tried on cereal for reflux early on,and has never liked it,even now that i can mix it with a fruit, she just doesnt like it.It doesnt hurt to try it,but just fyi on the soy thing!!!
