I'm going to be in Tokyo from December 28, 2007 to December 31, and then in Sendai from December 31 to January 4, 2008. I was hoping to see some Japanese sports, like sumo wrestling or kendo (swordfighting). Can anyone offer suggestions on what to see?

I see from the sumo site at http://www.sumo.or.jp/eng/ that there is no major sumo tournament during this time, but are there any minor tournaments? (I don't know if the beginners compete at the same events as the ozeki and yokozuna, or if the minor leagues have separate events, like in USA minor league baseball games).

There would be no sumo at all during those dates. The New Year's Basho would commence in Tokyo from 1/7. There is no minor league pro sumo, the new guys usually join a stable when they are 15 or so and then try to work their way up. In the summer there are exhibition sumo tournaments in communities like Sendai, but not in the winter. The big sports event in Japan over the holidays is the Hakone Ekiden.

The previous answer is correct so I won't restate what has already been said. But I have a question for you. Could you extend your stay in Tokyo? I was lucky enough to see a tournament in Tokyo a few years ago. It was amazing. We arrived in time for the beginning of the afternoon portion. We saw the parade and the rituals performed by the Ozeki and Yokozuna. Then we watched the rest of the day's activities. What you see on TV does not even come close to actually being there.

If the bypass to coincides with a adventure you will possibly desire to purchase tickets from the venue. There won't be a adventure inspite of the undeniable fact that, the as quickly as a year spring basho in Osaka as a results of start next month has been cancelled as a results of extreme allegations of tournament fixing. there is not any assure the might adventure will bypass forward.

unfortunately for you, that time is part of shogatsu - New Years holidays - when all of Japan is practically traveling to their hometowns and back. Many tourist sites are closed save for temples and shrines.

Sorry! Try back in mid-January when the tournament begins in Tokyo.
