because it has so many bugs and takes so much more memory to run and so many problems are out there with already existing programs. Heck, I have an apple II from 1987 and it starts up, opens documents and shuts down faster... I'm not kidding.

Windows Vista is a Microsoft Product. Given the monopolistic practices of that company (as judged by the EU and on its way to judgment by the US before Dubya quashed it) there is reason to dislike it intently.
Secondly all Windows OSes are inferior by nature to UNIX/Linux /MacOS which all derive from a true multi-user multiprocess base. Windows derived from DOS and has never scaled well enough to be used for anything beyond low end servers. Also being exclusively GUI the user really does have little real control over things. If it isn't written into the GUI menu you can't do it. With the other OSes you can drop to command line and gain a very high level control.
Why is Vista hated even more over XP?
1) Vista is a basically a big brother setup. It is aimed at the idea that you are a pirate so you have to keep proving you are not.
2) The drivers don't seem to exist for Vista that did for XP. I know one person that complains because her printer which works fine under XP and prints photograph quality pictures will barely even do color under Vista and is very grainy. (This even with the "help" of M$ support.)
3) Vista is being force upon people. People that like XP can't order it anymore because M$ forces the vendors to only ship XP. (Interestingly this made Dell begin offering Linux instead of Windows as a option.)

No one REALLY hates Vista, but there are issues with it that have yet to be resolved, as is usually the case with most Windows releases.
I am the coordinator of a program that gives free computers and training to families in SouthWest Michigan -Benton Harbor and St. Joseph in particular- and I'm asked this frequently, as the computers we give away are pre-loaded with Windows XP. It went through the same growing pains as Vista, but it has since turned into the OS of choise. I myself was reluctant to give up Windows 98SE, but when I got trained on XP, it was far, far better then ANY Windows release before, and now I swear by it. Once Gates and Co. work out the bugs in Vista, it too will take it's place in the Windows universe.
Besides, as I often tell my sessions, as long as your computer is doing what you want it to do, it's NEVER outdated!
Hope I helped.

Well if you just got Vista, that is why!
When it first came out, about 8-10 months ago(or more), there were a lot of bugs in it. There still are some bugs in the software, just not as many.
XP is just a lot more reliable than Vista is.

Windows Vista is a huge program that takes up lots of hard disc space and memory.
If you have a computer that can handle it, then it is an excellent program.
Many people hate change.

It is only natural to hate change. It seems like we get used to one Operating System and they drop another one on us. I think in time people will come to like Vista.

The media player would scramble the last 15 seconds of every song it played. Try listening to Bolero when that happens!

I have it too. It is good, its slick, faster, more efficient and easier to use than previous windows.
But....
It is a tad dear
The constant asking permission can be annoying
The initial load up can take a while especially on laptops.
Some compatibiity issues
Fair view
