The government recommended value is 40p per mile, for the first 10000 miles, then 25p per mile, you can use you car to travel to your place of work with out telling the insurance company (but check you insurance policy). if you use it for work ie transporting any thing then you must tell them, and it will be a hefty insurance hike.

the rate is the same for all fuel types and engine size.

my insurance covers me (at no extra cost) to travel to my (some policy's say "regular") place of work , which could be any site in the UK

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs allow you to be paid up to 40p per mile for business use of a private car without being taxed on it. This is the rate that most companies pay.
The rate is the same for all vehicles. However, some employers will pay a lower rate for smaller-engined cars.

If you are using your own car for business use, you do need to inform your insurance company, and they will usually charge you more for the privilege.

The average mileage for a car per mile would be .48. That's if they are already reimbursing you for the fuel expenses, if not then it can go up. Most business average from .35 to .45. You should check your contract to see how many miles you are allowed to travel from your site before you can be reimbursed for any expense some have a limit.

Considering the price of gas, the increase in your insurance and wear and tear, a minimum or 45 cents per mile.

the average is 35p per mile, YES you must tell your insurance company but get your boss to pay the difference between your private use and business use, it can be quite a lot of difference.
