I always have plecos in my tank as I think they are great algae eaters. I usually use one of two products when my fish get ick, either Ick Guard or Quick Cure. Could either of these products kill my plecoses because they are scaleless? Any recommendations for ick medications?

Plecos tend not to get ich easily beacuse they do have the armoring over their bodies, but they, like most catfish, are sensitive to medications and salt.

That doesn't mean that you can't use these to treat ich, however - just start with a lower dose (maybe 1/4) and increase it by 1/4 ths over the course of the day until you have the full dose. Death usually happens only when you try to add the full dose at once.

If you're concerned about this, you can always set up a quarantine/hospital tank. It doesn't even need to be an aquarium, it could be a large plastic storage container. Just add an appropriately size heater and a small filter or airstone to keep the pleco and other sensitive fish in a lesser dosage while treating the rest of the tank with the full dose.

Plecos have pretty hard plates on them...I don't think would affect them but I have always used Malachite Green to cure ick. It is similar to kimo when treating cancer patients in humans. It damages the fish sometimes I meen I have lost a few but it works
