HDTV is HDTV, whether it's provided by the cable company or the satellite company. So, you won't see any difference between the two. The reliability of the signals is probably the determining factor as to which one is better. Some people live in areas where cable TV service is sketchy (poor signals, old cable plant, etc.) and, in that case, a satellite receiver would be more reliable and, therefore, provide better picture quality.

I choose to subscribe to cable for a couple of reasons: First, I'm used to the cable line-up and the on-screen guide. Second, the San Diego cable companies have an exclusive deal with the San Diego Padres where they show over 140 games a year for free on their own baseball channel. So, you can't get the Padres games on satellite.

I do like some of the special packages that are available on satellite. My brother-in-law has DirecTV and has an extra dish he takes to NASCAR races in his motorhome. After the racing season (around August), he lends me the extra dish and receiver, which also includes the NFL Network and NFL Sunday Ticket. It's not HD, but at least I get to watch whatever game I want if I don't like what the local networks are showing.
