A Prodigal Son relates to a parable of Jesus:
A man's son leaves him, squanders his fortune in booze and hussies, and returns penniless. The father throws a feast. The younger brother objects, but the father says that he is so overjoyed his "Prodigal Son" has returned. So will be entrance into heaven for some of the most erroneous sinners, like St. Paul, who was a tormentor of the Christians before he fell of his "high horse".

A Prodigal son also implies unrealized potential, or wasted potential.

Its a parable from the Bible about the Prodigal Son. Prodigal means to drive away, squander, lose recklessly.

"Prodigal Son - A Story from the New Testament
The Parable of the Prodigal Son in the Gospel of Luke is familiar to most of us. It's the story of a rebellious son who rejects his father's upbringing. Prideful and strong, the son heads-off to a far-away land, leads a wild life of adventure, and squanders everything of value (literally and symbolically). Not until he's confronted with failure and despair, does he return home, repentant and willing to do anything to win back his father's favor. To his surprise, and the surprise of others, he's welcomed, without question, into his father's loving and forgiving arms. No amount of time, no amount of money, and no amount of rebellion could get in the way of the father's patience and unconditional love for his son. "For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found" (Luke 15:24). Of course, the awesome message of this parable is that God is patient and gracious with all of His children. He is willing to welcome each of us home into His loving and forgiving arms"

In the New Testament Jesus tells the parable of the prodigal son. This son asked for his inheritance early and went off drinking and carousing. He lost all of his money and had to go back to his father and grovel. His father, rather than being disappointed, was overjoyed that his son had returned.

In this parable the prodigal son represents mankind, who stray and sin. The father represnts God, who welcomes his sinning children back with open arms because he loves them so much.

Prodigal, therefore, means recklessly extravagant or wasteful.

the prodigal son is very often referred to in the bible. You see the one son, the prodigal son, is the heir of the family, they inherit the fortune. He then runs away with all of the fortune, and then basically spends it. He then comes back to his father and his family and begs for him to take pity on him. The dad the does pity him so he says to everyone like for dinner we are going to have the fattest cow for dinner, and makes life better for his prodigal son.

The Prodigal Son, also known as the Lost Son, is one of the best known parables of Jesus. It only appears in the Gospel of Luke, in the New Testament of the Bible. By tradition, it is usually read on the third Sunday of Lent. It is the third and final member of a trilogy, following the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin.
The story is found in Luke 15:11-32. Jesus tells the story of a man who has two sons. The younger demands his share of his inheritance while his father is still living, and goes off to a distant country where he "waste[s] his substance with riotous living", and eventually has to take work as a swine herder. There he comes to his senses, and determines to return home and throw himself on his father's mercy. But when he returns home, his father greets him with open arms, and hardly gives him a chance to express his repentance; he kills a "fatted calf" to celebrate his return. The older brother becomes jealous at the favored treatment of his faithless brother and upset at the lack of reward for his own faithfulness. But the father responds: Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

The Prodigal Son, also known as the Lost Son, is one of the best known parables of Jesus. He was the son of one guy, who returned and was welcome back from his father because he understood his mistakes, no matter how much time had passed.
