Germany under Hitler ran paternalistic social welfare programs even more generous than exist today in modern Germany. Nazism was both nationalist and populist and believed that people should serve the state and the state should serve the Aryan race and because people belong to the state the state should care for them. Socialist in one meaning is that the economy should serve society not the elite, and since Nazis believed that every thing should serve the state and that society was the state, there was not really a problem in calling themselves socialist.

It's just a name. Names are arbitrary. At the beginning of the Nazi movement, they needed to gain populist support. That came from the working class. You are correct in your assertion that fascism could not possibly be further from socialism.

Additionally, look at the People's Republic of China. Does that country seem to be run by the people? Or how about the Democratic Republic of Vietnam? They're a bunch of bloody communists. Also, the Republic of Iran is hardly a republic...it's a theocracy run by a bunch of lunatics.

Your guess is as good as mine, but just think why did he kill jews when he was part jewish himself. Or better yet why did he rule Germany when he wasn't even a German himself. The man was a fraud all the way around. He used whatever he could to gain the respect of the people and gain power. To fully understand Hilter I will tell you the best book I have ever read about the true politics during WWII Is the rise and fall of the Third Riech. Very long, but extremly interesting. It will enlighten you on so many apsects of Hitler and things he really did to gain power.

Nationalism and socialism were two "big ideas" of the time so it was partly a marketing thing to try to convince people that his party was combining the "best aspects of both", that sort of thing.
