Ska is a genre of syncopated music, with Jamaican origins.

Ska started in Jamaica around 1960, and started out as a fusion of Jamaican Mento and American Motown.

It is not like rock at all.

Rock music is played on the beat:

1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4..

Ska music is played on the off-beat:

..1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4

To me, if it doesn't have that off-beat, it isn't ska.

ska is the best type of music that exists.

Ska is basically a little bit of rock, a little bit of reggae, throw in some horns and some checkered fabric and you've got ska.

ska bands:
Mustard Plug
Streetlight Manifesto
Aquabats
Catch 22
Pietasters
Big D and the Kids Table
Save Ferris
Spitvalves
Toasters

there are so many more, but I'm blanking out!

It's probably already been explained in a more than satisfactory way so here's some stuff to check out:

First wave: Desmond Decker (I'm not too well versed on first wave, I suppose I should correct it, but Desmond Decker is good)

Second Wave: the Specials, Madness, the Selector (the self titled Specials record is a monster record, really really good. My favorite ska release)

Third Wave (a lot more punk infusion): Operation Ivy, the Aquabats, Reel Big Fish, Buck-O-Nine. I'm not a huge fan of the third wave, but it's fun.

The Mighty Mighty Bostones are a pretty neat tweener band for second and third wave.

It's kind of a new wave - reggae hybrid. Good example of Ska is an 80's band called the English Beat, UB-40 is another example.

It's halfway between Reggae and Big Band.
Here is an example from a band called The Aquabats

Terrible video quality but decent representation of ska.

Older Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish are some examples of Ska.

It's in the Rock category, which has Punk in it. The instruments include like jazz instruments such as the Trombone, Saz, Trumpet, etc.
