''No one "invented" Santa Claus, but here are the major elements that contributed to the image we have today:
Ancient pagan images of Odin/Wodan, a wise and powerful deity, infulenced early images of Santa Claus figures--a wizened, bearded man who "knew" good and evil, and who rode a white horse with 8 legs''

It is a little known fact that Johannes Kepler wrote (in Latin) a long (and extremely boring) treatise on 'Sanctus Paternalis Clausionis', based on legends circulating at the time, in the early 17th century, mostly to do with mid-European pagan deities, some of which had been rather loosely 'Christianised'.
It didn't have much impact at the time, but it did bring together a number of separate myths, and slowly these were adopted into various Christian festivals, Christmas in particular, in the broad area of south-eastern Europe. These became formalised in 'folk lore' and formed the basis of various stories spreading west towards what is now Germany, and Austria, and later on into a recognisable form of today's stories.
Good luck with the homework!

The Santa Claus we know today in the red suit and white beard was invented by Coca Cola for an advertising campaign, previously he wore green but they changed it to suit their company colours. The red cheeked round faced gentleman was based on a work colleague of the artist.
