I live in Ireland and I would eventually like to teach English as a foreign language in France or possibly Poland, I want to take a course but I don't have a degree. Does anyone know if there are courses in Ireland that I can take which will be recognised in these countries without having to spend 3 years taking a degree course?

You do not need a degree, in fact in some schools you don't need any qualification, but they're not recommendable schools; bad conditions, bad pay.
You can take a CELTA course which is Certificate of English Language Teaching of Adults. It's a short course, but if given in a reputable centre will really set you up for teaching. You'll be a better teacher and you'll be able to earn more. Try the Bell Schools, International House, British Council etc. There must be loads of places in Ireland because half the Spanish population goes there every summer to learn English.
To summarise, you don't need a degree, but you could study English Language teaching at university level if you wanted. I would strongly advise you to do an ELT course before you go to a foreign country as you'll be better prepared and better qualified. If you wanted, you could just go to your chosen country where you may possibly be able to get work in some cowboy establishment.
There are also schools abroad where you can do the course and then they help you get your first job.
PS. Please note that English Language Teaching is not very well paid in general

Your answer is Yes and No. Some countries need to provide the skill of speaking English to their people that sometimes they are only looking for a "Native speaker". Then some countries want the "native speaker" to have accredited education because often the audience may be well educated in their country and just need to learn English for international commerce. Go on the Internet search engine and search for TEFL (teaching English as a Foreign Language). I know the pay is terrific and maybe a 3 year college education is a worthwhile investment in the long run. I know several friends who went this career route and never returned to the USA. They found their niche, loved it and three even married locally.

To become a teacher you need a teaching qualification, such as PGCE which you could get by attending part time 1 day a week over a year, or really you need the full 2 year course. It's no good just knowing your subject, you now have to demonstrate you can teach, role playing etc. lots of written and theory work, lots and lots of reading up, learning behavioural skills, how to adapt different teaching methods to suit different learning abilities of your learners, not so much the teacher these days. You learn to teach from the learner's point of view.

as far as I know ( as I am Polish ) you do not need much qualification to teach in there. You just go give private tuition and students pay you quite a lot. Well you better confirm it with someone. Besides some linguistic schools take on board native speakers and train them later on...most important is the quality of language you are speaking, you accent, pronounciation...so course might be a waste of time in some cases. Good luck!

There are courses for the teaching of English as a foreign language which you can take, without completing a degree
As to which ones are recognized, try contacting potential employers and asking them about required qualifications. . . .

You do not necessarily need a degree. All you need is a TEFL course www.tefl.co.uk

Google "TEFL Ireland" and you will find a number of companies who arrange the TEFL courses in Ireland.

Good luck!

Hi! I live in Greece. I got my "Proficiency" certificate and got my licence to teach but in the Private sector. In order to teach in a public school you need a degree. That's how it works here in Greece.
