I don't have a problem with it. Putin is a bad man but Time does not use that issue to reward world figures; they name someone who has politically and/or culturally shaped the world stage. He has by redeveloped Russia in a economic and political superpower (if not in a military capacity) again.

Putin has a louder diplomatic voice in the Middle East than Bush... that in itself makes him a real and strong player.

I don't agree with this decision either. I understand that Time Magazine doesn't factor in whether the acts the Person of the Year committed were good or bad just the impact they had. However, I think Al Gore has done a lot more than Putin has, and I'm sure there are others who would be even better qualified. I think the main reason for this decision was for this reason right here. Time Magazine is all over the news and people are talking about it everywhere. Time Magazine is after all trying to make money and if this is what sells than this is what they will do.

Russia was not doing well will capitalism. Imagine growing up with the strictest parents ever. They controlled every aspect of your life. Who your friends are, what you did with your free time, what classes you took at school. Now imagine that kid going away to collage, no parents, no one demanding you obey. What happens to that kid? They go wild with unfettered freedom. In some cases it end tragically. That is what happen to the Russian people the leaders of that country went wild and the people suffered. The common people like teachers, police, firefighters, military, doctors and nurses were not getting paid. Putin is old school KGB he saw his country being destroyed with corruption. I don't know that I would name him man of the year but somebody had to stop the disintegration of that country. Keeping Russia from becoming a third world country will keep the rest of the world safe from Russian weapons being taken and sold on the black market.
