Boy you are a bit crazy!!!! lol. We do have plenty of oil in the US and just off shore. The reason we are not using it is two fold: First and foremost Liberals stop every attempt to drill and repair refineries with some stupid green regulation.
Second (and this is only my opinion): if we maintain these reserves then when the rest of the worlds oil is just about used up, we still have it!!!

Yea you make some good points. Co shale oil is supposed to have more than over there as well. The problem is big buisness and trade agreements. Right now it is still cheaper to import. Also states require EPA standards that oil companies only have to deal with on a limited level. Again its the money, but as the prices continue to rise you will see things start to change as it becomes more competetive to drill here.
By the way we supported a coup of Hugo back in 2002.

We get more than 7% of our oil from there but it is pretty low. Most of our oil comes from Canada, Mexico, and I think a few places in South America. That's on the import list which doesn't show how much oil we get from ourselves.

We do use our own oil; however, our own oil only covers 60% of our need. That's why we have to import the additional 40%. If we could somehow reduce consumption by 40%, we could free ourselves from dependence on foreign oil. Personally, I think we should be helping Russia tap into its vast oil reserves. I'd much rather be dependent upon the Russians than the Arabs. We should also make nice with Mr. Chavez to a certain extent. I'd much rather healthy energy trade between the US and Venezuela than between the US and the Arabs. We should also be actively developing alternative energy sources like wind, water, and nuclear power. With concerted policy efforts, we could be free of the Arabs within 20 years. Then we could sit back and watch them drown in their own filth and poverty...

Oil is cheap... oil extraction and refining is expensive. There are many untapped oil sources in the USA but it would be very expensive to drill for it. To actually tap those resources would be more expensive than the readily oil production from imports. This is purely economics.
To the above simpletons: this is not a liberal/conservative issue... this is an economic issue.

I`m aware theres plenty of oil in the United States, however the cost factor is there,it`s not the labour or people being lazy.We buy oil where it`s most accessible and cheapest. The oil price or cost per gallon wouldn`t change due to refinement, last i heard they were not building new refineries for crude.

The buying oil is a big problem. I too feel they should start digging for it here in the United States, like in Alaska.

Okay your question was why don't we use or own oil and stop war, then you say at the end of your speach,
"If we are going to buy oil we can get it from Canada. That's just hippie-redneck oil and Canada is never going to declare war on us and even if they did those mounties are no match for us."
You lost me sorry.

Because, when we use up all of our own, we are truly dependent on these foreign dictators. that doesn't work well if you have heated relations with them.
Leaving it right were it is, may end up winning us a future war, if we do not have alternatives developed by then.
Sorry, but that is the strategic advantage.
second, drilling our own oil, isn't going to lower gas prices, when there is no economic incentive for refiners to boost supply, and cause prices and their margins to fall. There is far more economic incentive to pinch supply, and blame environmentalists.
Its the nature of supply vs demand.

The actual reason why we can't drill in this country is because of the environmentalists. They won't allow us to drill in ANWAR and most states won't allow us to drill off of their coasts. They had an article in the news recently in Chicago they wanted to build a new refinery but the government wouldn't permit it. We have oil, that's a fact, but the environmentalists won't allow to drill for it. There hasn't been a new oil refinery built since the 1970s. We need to do it.
