-abolition of human sacrifice
-abolition of slavery
-women's suffrage
-child labor laws
-civil rights... which are inalienable and come from god... not from the state... cant take them away.
-I could go on... but my point is made
Self-professed egalitarian humanists [socialists] such as Hitler, Mussolini,Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot,..., etc, are responsible for the deaths of over 140 million human beings in the pursuit of their utopian [distopian] delusions... which remain closely held socialist ideals [delusions] of the neoprogressive left who have taken over the democratic party... kicked the classic liberals out [except for Leberman] who in turn took over the republican party [the neocons, who brought their big spending ways with them]... as Reagan said [and the Reagan Democrats] ,"I did'nt change parties, my party changed".
As for the crusades, with few exceptions, was an attempt to drive the conquesting muslim empire out of europe and TAKE BACK what was Christiandom...
As for the inquisition which was carried out by the State, not the Church.
As for the Salem witch trials of which accounted for only 12 deaths.
As for the conquest of Latin America... the blood letting of the mayan, aztec, and inca empires surpasses that of the SPANISH conquest of LATIN America, of which the overwhelming majority of deaths were wrought from disease brought by the SPANIARDS.
Note that many central and south american religious sacraments express gratitude for the abolition of human sacrifice... a struggle brought about by christianity.
The democide committed by secular, athiest, and pagan societies, make christian societies look like bastions of sainthood.
And I am not a christian... just an honest objective student of history... countervailing the mendascious revisionist bolderdash put out by marxist bloats such as Howard Zinn and Noam Choamsky, to name ONLY a few... of whom affirm the montra of their phony dielectic,"If you can't rewrite history, don't teach it"... let it dye on the vine... we'll indoctrinate the youth of the next generation with our goebbelian propaganda.
The moment humans become the meaning and measure of all things... will be the moment humans will loose their humanity... i.e. the seductive faustian bargain of egalitarian humanism.
Those who would burn books... will burn people.

Well, dude.. that's not going to do much. For, you see, like many other "utopia" theories, while elimination of Religion does sound like the key to world peace, if we just sit down and talk about it, and especially at the news of so many islam extremist, and the christian history... BUT like everything else, when you move into reality, you will find that it does not translate as well. Even if all the current religions were disproved, I can guarantee you; in 100 years there will be some new religion about the "spirit of the universe" in 150 years, there will be at least 2 factions of that religion. people will start fighting again. Eliminating religion ?! ...wishful thinking

What about during the formation of the US? Many of our founding fathers were strongly religious people, but being aware of the corruption it can cause in politics, tried to create a politics oriented government without a state sponsored religion where all religions are free to practice within that country. The end result was many religious, and non-religious getting together in politics. OK, so maybe religion and politics didn't meet eye to eye, but they created an atmosphere where religion and politics could coexist in one country without too much dictation from one or the other about what the other does.
What about when Constantine ended the persecution of Christians and made Christianity the state sponsored religion?

The example I can think of is the reconquista in Spain, which took about 600 years, but finally the "Christians" overthrew Muslim rule in Spain. That may not have been so great back then, but now I'm glad Spain isn't controlled by the Muslims, though they left some great architecture.

It depends on how you percieve things. A lot of historians could take any of the ugly events you gave and see the positives in all of them. The Crusades actually benefitted Western culture greatly (even if it might not have been a goal).

The religious fervor of the Polish people and a visit from a Polish pope made Solidarity possible and pretty much spelled the end of communism in Poland.
