I like some of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series - not all because the jokes get a tad stale after a while. (It can be said of any series that the earliest ones are the best).
I also like Douglas Adams books.
If you like detective fiction with a historical background, you can't go past the Falco series by Lindsay Davies.

A Painted House by John Grisham is my favourite book. It's loosely based on his childhood in rural Arkansas. You wont be disappointed

Ah well those are two different questions. My favourite book is "The Space Eater" by David Langford, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're into hard sf.
I would recommend The Diceman by Luke Rhinehart. It's got everything - it's intelligent, emotional, funny, makes you think, and what it says on the cover is true - it WILL change your life.
