The dots and arrows definitely are nuisances, but the ¶ symbol shows exactly where the end of each paragraph is, which can be very useful. All paragraph formatting (indentation, margins, text justification) is attached to it, so accidentally deleting one can cause some mysterious formatting changes.
If you think you can get used to the ¶ characters, I'll show you how to get rid of the others, which usually aren't as useful. Do this:
1.Click the Tools->Options menu item.
2.Click the View tab.
3.Under Formatting Marks, select ONLY Paragraph Marks and deselect all others.
4.Click OK.
That's it.
None of them will print, by the way.

You have your "symbols" turned visible. It's showing you the spaces at dots and P is a hard paragraph break (carriage return, or Enter key). They will NOT show up when you print the document. Go ahead, print a page, see what it looks like. If they're annoying you, there should be a menu entry somewhere with the backwards P on it that turns that feature on and off. It is possible to configure Word so that menu entry isn't there, so if you can't find it, you'll have to figure out how to configure it back in. And it's different for every different version of Word. Really, if you can't find the menu entry, it would be easier to just put up with it.

This is the end of paragraph symbol which is normally invisible. You have the "hidden characters" mode turned on. Use the Show/Hide button - which looks like the backwards P that you described... ¶. Click it to switch back to the hidden mode.
Either way, those characters don't print.

That's a paragraph mark. It should not appear on the printed document. It simply tells you that you pressed Return at that point in the text. In word, you can go into the options and choose not to show paragraph marks but most pros leave them on.

Actually, it's a paragraph mark. That's what you want to uncheck.
