how to prevent this? alternatively, how to make browsers believe you are in the USA? thanks.

If you'd prefer to visit Google.com instead of Google.co.in, click on the "Google.com" link on the bottom right-hand side of the Google homepage.

If you have cookies enabled, your browser will connect directly to Google.com on all subsequent visits. Refer the link given below..

The browsers don't care where they are. The server's serving you pages can look at your IP address to determine what country you are requesting from then redirect you to a more local (at least physically) server which will give you faster responses.

I can't recall offhand if Google has a preference setting for which server they send you to. You may be able to find a proxy that will allow you to appear as if you were in the US however, to some sites.

Just under the search box there is a line of choices. The last one on the right is: 'Go to Google.com'.
Click on that one and it will take you to the USA site.
