Besides 100 dollars, that is.

I'm a mostly casual gamer - I don't care about having the best of the best, but if it's definitely worth the extra money, I don't mind getting it.

Though I'd rather buy a monitor that's a few inches bigger with that money. :)

The first poster has summed it up nicely. The GT is more of a high-end card, whereas the GTS is midrange (there's a 320mb version of the 8800GTS available for around $250)

For casual gaming, you're unlikely to see any real benefits from the more expensive card.

The 8800 GT is based in the new G92 GPU from Nvidia and is based in a 65 nm process. It has twice the bandwidth of the 8600 GTS.
All you need to know is that the 8800 Gt is about 2x as powerful as the 8600 GTS.
