Okay, so I'm 18 and a college student. My parents recently moved to South Carolina. My best friend from my home state of New Jersey is coming to visit me, and for his birthday I got him a handle of gray goose. I know it is illegal for a minor to carry alcohol in an unopened container but how does it work for an 18 year old? Are they still under the same law? In this case is a minor considered someone below the legal drinking age? I was just wondering if it was better to ship it via fedex / UPS to him or would he be safe just packing it in his bag and taking it with him? thanks in advance.

You would still be a minor in possession. FedEx/UPS would be your best bet. You actual have three laws working against you:
South Carolina, the state you are flying from and federal laws.

If you give your friend the bottle and he is under 21, you can be charged with that crime as well.

Im not sure about your laws, but in ny you can have an unopened container in your car because someone else may have bought it and left it in the car. As for transport, at this time you can NOT take any liquids on a plane over 4 ounces anyways, so pack it in your suitcase . They dont check whats in it at bag check, and when it gets scanned elsewhere they sure as hell arent going to waste their time checking if the bag owner is of legal age. I carried a bottle of wine home from Italy at 16 in my checked luggage. No worries!

18 is still considered a minor in that case. If your not legal to buy it, it's not legal to possess it. Simple.

no one is permitted to carry alcohol on a plane. And you're underage! You're not permitted to mail liquor - but check with UPS/FEDEX's guidelines about shipping that. Geez...just empty it in the sink!
