My husband & I have not had to pay utilities because we've been in the Army and lived in military housing. We are going to move into a house/duplex/apartment, whatever we can find and are wondering what else besides water, sewer and electric do you pay? What can we expect to pay a month? We live in Kentucky, and we will have a 3 BR 1.5 bath. Thanks for answers!

Ok - there is 2 adults and 2 children (4 &1), we always turn out lights that aren't used and when we leave... we will do laundry twice a week and obviously all will take baths. Can someone actually give me prices? Like $___ a month for water etc.?

Just tell me your family size and what you pay - that would be helpful

We live in Florida and my husband got out of the AF in April. We were living in base housing and obviously had to move out, and it was definately hard (this is why we had to resort to staying with my parents for now)...so besides the $1200 a month mortgage we had our water bill which was around $140 a month (crazy) tv was like over $60, electric was over $100, trash was i think about $40...i'm pretty sure almost all the bills were at least $100 or close to it. All that on a 1 person income. Oh yeah and food, which we were lucky if we got to spend $200 a month on and we have 2 kids (3 and 1). But then again this is florida and everything is outrageous here.

I live in the Louisville, KY area, have a similar house and am a Realtor. Plan on your power/gas bill running between $50-150/mo depending on season (more if you have poor insulation), water/sewage $45-85 every two months, phone $35/mo, broadband Internet connection $35-50/mo, garbage is usually paid for by local taxes.

if you know the address of where you are moving you can often call the power company and get the average monthly bill in the previous year to get more concrete numbers. Also, don't forget about cutting the grass and expenses associated with it (mower, gas, time).

It depends on the local area and individual building. So I would suggest you ask your real-estate agent. If you are doing all the hard work yourself, a prospective sellor or renting agency will have to tell you what the previous residents paid. Garbage collection is a utility in some areas around here.

Not only is is based on rates in your area but also consumption. Depending on your consumption habits and people in household, that will determine what you will pay. You won't know until you move in and see how much you are using. Nobody can really give a good estimate either without knowledge of your current consumption and family size.

Depends what you heat your house with. Electric rates vary.

Here in NY State, I pay annually:

$250 garbage pickup
$600 propane
$1,500 oil
$1,200 electric

No water or sewer in the country!

I pay separate bills for:

Water (in my city that includes trash pickup)
Electricity
Gas
Cable
Phone

In the North, I've also paid separate bills for heating oil and trash pickup.

Your best bet for averages, ask a neighbor. Be warned aging applicances do suck up more energy.
