The collared shirt is white with thin, black stripes. The sweater is black with shades of gray comprising the argyle. And it is a v-neck.

My fiancee said it would be "too much going on". But I've never tried it.

Any ideas?

There is nothing wrong with wearing a collared shirt under and argyle sweater or any sweater for that matter. I think your fiancee is saying that there would be too much going on because of the argyle pattern and the strips but you really want be able to see the strips all that much because it will be under the sweater. It will be fine. Look at it in the mirror and trust your first instinct

It's not stupid, but the right shirt is the key factor. I had a shirt with too big of a collar. Collar makes a big difference, as it should stay in and be a good size. Sweater too, but it's not too big of a deal.

Yes, you can, especially that both are in the same colors and especially that the stripes on the shirt are thin. Your mirror won't lie. Try it on and take a look.

I definetely would. I doubt there is too much going on, because you're staying in the colour family. Pairing it with a cute pair of black boots and dark jeans would be adorable!

It might be too much going on. If the sweater were solid then no problem.

i say....any combo works in this decade. if you wear it and act like its a great combo....you will probably see everyone else wearing similar things in a few days. :o) look at the celebs...they wear insane clothes and for some reason, everyone seems to like it...?

I think a mixture of patterns is fun and different, as long as you keep it simple with your accessories (i.e. plain silver earrings) and your pants (plain black or grey pants).
