great question, people are always looking for the government to take care of them, do they have no dignity? this reminds me of the movie Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe as boxer, Joe Braddock, when he was so ashamed that he had to go to the welfare office for money, ( i would be too) then when he started making money he paid the government back basically saying "i live in a great country that helped me out when i most needed it, its at least i can do is pay them back" and that was a true story he did return to the welfare office and pay them back because he was a real man that believed that you should work for money and be responsible for YOURSELF and not expect the government to take care of you, i am a republican but JFK said it best "It's not what your country can do for you, its what you can do for your country."

I'm being serious. I was raised, you smile at someone ... they smile back. You study hard, you get good grades. Get good grades and you do better. Positive action=positive reward. People wrong you or life throws you a curve ball and decent people help you.
Then it got to where decent people were expected to make-up for those who didn't have a good start and didn't have anything to do with it. Head starts....handicaps....whatever you want to call it. Everyone starts the race equal......unless of course you're special and then you start first.
We have changed the rules and did everything and now it's gotten to the point where you are ENTITLED simply for being.
Everyone can't be first. Everyone can't WIN. Everyone isn't the BEST.
Now it's gone so far as to say I deserve it because I never had it. I don't even have to compete anymore because we are making sure anything hard and difficult is ousted and I am declared winner by default.
People expect food without doing anything to get it. They expect to have, because others have. Without any effort what-so-ever to get it.
There are BASIC things that are deserved but it's gone way beyond that now. If there's a chance I can lie, cheat or scream loud enough, they will give it to me......why bother working for it when I can get it for nothing?
It's a balance and the scales have been tipped.

I don't want a hand out, so my answer will cost you nothing.
The people who would like to control the masses promise them free things like Hillary does, but she states to others that some things will have to be taken away. Sort of sounds like robbing the working Peter to pay the non-working Paul!
When you give things away, health care , food, shelter, then where are the incentives to work? This could spill over to those who do work, but are ending up giving most of their money away to support others. So, they say why shouldn't I collect. This kind of thinking is where socialism becomes stronger and stronger and before you know it, you will end up with a dictator.
Remember a government big enough to do everything FOR you is big enough to do ANYTHING to you!........Fred Thompson was right on that one!!
Edit: Don't let some fool you with our constitutioal rights to safety, ie; The Fire Dept, Police etc. These are rights, not entitlements. The only ones who should receive those are our mentally and physically disabled and the elderly. None of us mind giving a hand up, it's the hand outs that upset us!

No disrespect but I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the issue. Nothing the government provides is free. I'm sure you would not turn away the "free" service provided by the fire department if your house was on fire or not call the police if a burglar entered your house citing a refusal to accept a handout. Will you not allow your children to accept the charity education provided by the public school system? Ridiculous right? Because you know these things are not truly free and you pay for them with your taxes. Requesting that the government manage other services with full understanding of the costs is no different.

Most of us don't want a hand out. We work hard and want to work in a system that works hard for us.
Granted there are those that want a free ride... and this is why I support Reform of social programs. But plenty of people need a little help (help, not free ride) to get by. Our programs have their faults.. but they do more good than bad and could we truly call ourselves a compassionate nation.. a world leader... if we were to not even help take care of our own when it is needed?

What we liberals advocate is not a hand out, but rather, a hand up. We all fall down sometimes and it's not the responsibility of the government to pick us up, but it would be nice to know that if we do fall, we won't slip between the cracks. What we advocate is our government acting as a safety net. I'm actually somewhat in favor of people repaying welfare, unemployment, etc., but only if they're making $25,000 per year or more with a maximum deduction of $10.00 per paycheck. The true judge of how great a country is is how well it takes care of its least fortunate citizens.
Now onto a different yet related subject; Corporate Welfare. If it is not the governments job to support its least fortunate citizens, then it most certainly is not the governments job to support the country's most fortunate citizens. If Socialism is a redistribution of wealth from rich to poor, then what is a redistribution of wealth from poor and middle class to the rich? Our government bails out banks, the auto industry, etc. If YOU started a business and it failed, would the US government bail YOU out? NO! So why are we doing it for companies that had their chance. In a "free" market economy the government doesn't interfere. Apparently, our own government doesn't know that. And if one of those businesses were to fail, another business would spring up to take its place to meet the demand for their goods or services. It is not our governments job to bail out special business interests by propping them up on the backs of the US taxpayers. If you insist we can or must, then we can and must take care of our least fortunate citizens as well. For if we can help the most fortunate among us, we can most certainly help the least fortunate Americans among us as well.

I haven't seen any, where do you live. What I have seen are hard working people paying their hard earned dollars for health care and greedy corporations glad to take the money until they get ill, then cancel policies or refusing claims. A cure for toe fungus that damages your liver. Hiring of illegals, so they don't have to pay minimum wage. Companies stealing from retirement funds. And the list goes on with items big and small, I think I would prefer to see someone with their hand out to someone with their hand already in my wallet.

nothings free but for some people money is....our money. These people who collect welfare and what not have no incentive to get off their butt and do something if the government is willing to pay them for sitting there? I say if your gonna give money away make them work for it and get jobs maybe in the city cleaning up their neighborhoods or maybe give them nothing at all so they have to do something.

I want nothing for free. What these people fail to realize that nothing is truly free.
This of course is just my opinion, but I think that it all boils down to the US becoming a society of lazy people. If you think about it, before the Raw Deal, oh I mean the New Deal, people needed to work hard and provide for themselves and their family. Now if you are lazy you don't have to be accountable to your family or even yourself, because the government is there with a handout. Being lazy will always be easier then working hard when there are no consequences.

Because they are large corporations with major political clout in both parties. they do not think that earned profits are enough, they wish handouts, and tax breaks from The Federal and State Governments as well.
